General Questions
What training methods do you use?
At Isy's Ways, we primarily use positive reinforcement methods which reward desired behaviors rather than punishing unwanted ones. Our approach is based on modern dog psychology and learning theory, focusing on clear communication and building a strong relationship between dogs and their owners.
We customize our approach for each dog, taking into consideration their personality, learning style, and specific needs. While we emphasize positive methods, we also incorporate balanced training techniques when appropriate, always prioritizing the dog's physical and emotional well-being.
How do I know which training program is right for my dog?
The best program depends on your dog's specific needs, age, and current behavior. We recommend starting with a free phone consultation where we can learn more about your dog and recommend the most appropriate training approach. You can also book an initial assessment where our trainers will evaluate your dog in person.
As a general guide:
- For high-energy dogs who need physical outlets: Shiva's Workout Lessons
- For dogs who pull or have poor leash manners: Dymond's On Leash Program
- For dogs who know basic commands but need advanced control: Spartacus's Off Leash Training
- For dogs with anxiety, aggression, or other behavioral issues: Danja's Behavioral Modification
What areas do you service in Northern Virginia?
We primarily serve the Northern Virginia area including Vienna, McLean, Fairfax, Arlington, Alexandria, Reston, Herndon, Great Falls, and Falls Church. For clients outside these areas, please contact us to discuss options.
For our Shiva's Workout Lessons that include pickup/drop-off service, we serve locations within a 15-mile radius of our facility in Vienna. Additional fees may apply for locations beyond this radius.
How old should my dog be to start training?
Training can begin at any age! For puppies, we recommend starting basic training as soon as they come home, typically around 8-10 weeks of age. Early training focuses on socialization, basic manners, and preventing problem behaviors.
For adult dogs, it's never too late to start training or address behavioral issues. We have successfully worked with dogs of all ages, including seniors. Our methods are adapted based on the dog's age, physical capabilities, and temperament.
If you have a young puppy (under 16 weeks), we highly recommend starting with early socialization and foundation skills which are crucial during this developmental period.
Do you work with all breeds and sizes of dogs?
Yes, we work with all breeds, sizes, and mixes of dogs. Our trainers have experience with a wide variety of breeds, from tiny Chihuahuas to Great Danes and everything in between. We understand that different breeds have different inherent traits and tendencies, and we take these into consideration when developing training plans.
We also specialize in working with breeds that are often considered "challenging," such as high-energy working breeds (Border Collies, German Shepherds, Huskies), strong-willed breeds (Terriers, Beagles), and guardian breeds (Rottweilers, Dobermans).
Training Programs
What's the difference between your On Leash and Off Leash programs?
Our Dymond's On Leash Program focuses on teaching your dog to walk politely on a leash without pulling, lunging, or reacting to distractions. This program is suitable for all dogs and addresses leash-specific behaviors.
The Spartacus's Off Leash Program is more advanced and teaches dogs to respond reliably to commands even when not on a leash. This program builds on foundational obedience and focuses on distance control, reliable recall, and maintaining focus around significant distractions. It's designed for dogs who already have basic obedience skills and aims to give them more freedom while ensuring safety and control.
What does the Shiva's Workout involve?
Shiva's Workout Lessons are customized exercise and enrichment sessions designed to address your dog's physical and mental stimulation needs. Each session typically includes:
- Structured physical activity (running, swimming, agility exercises)
- Mental enrichment games and problem-solving challenges
- Socialization with appropriate playmates (if desired)
- Obedience practice in a high-energy context
- Decompression time to help your dog learn to calm down
The specific activities are tailored to your dog's age, breed, fitness level, and preferences. The goal is to provide a balanced outlet that tires them physically and mentally, reducing problem behaviors that stem from excess energy or boredom.
Can you help with severe behavioral issues like aggression?
Yes, our Danja's Behavioral Modification program is specifically designed to address serious behavioral issues, including various forms of aggression. Our approach to aggression cases includes:
- A comprehensive assessment to understand the underlying causes
- Development of a customized management and modification plan
- Systematic desensitization and counter-conditioning techniques
- Teaching alternative behaviors and coping mechanisms
- Owner education on reading dog body language and preventing triggers
It's important to note that addressing aggression typically requires more time and consistent work than standard obedience training. We provide ongoing support throughout the process and realistic expectations about outcomes. In some cases, we may recommend collaboration with a veterinary behaviorist, especially if medication might be beneficial alongside behavioral modification.
Do you offer training for specific issues like separation anxiety?
Yes, we offer specialized training for specific issues including separation anxiety, fear-based behaviors, resource guarding, and compulsive behaviors. These issues are typically addressed through our Danja's Behavioral Modification program, which is customized to target your dog's specific challenges.
For separation anxiety in particular, our approach includes:
- Establishing a predictable routine to reduce uncertainty
- Desensitization to departure cues
- Gradual alone-time training with careful progression
- Creating positive associations with alone time
- Environmental management and enrichment strategies
We also work closely with owners to develop practical management strategies that fit their lifestyle while the modification program is in progress.
Do you offer group classes?
We currently focus on private training rather than group classes to provide personalized attention and customized training plans for each dog. However, we do offer controlled socialization opportunities and small group practice sessions for dogs who have already completed certain training programs with us.
These small group sessions (maximum 3-4 dogs) help dogs practice their skills around distractions and are particularly beneficial for graduated Spartacus's Off Leash program participants.
For clients seeking the benefits of group learning, we can provide recommendations for reputable group classes in the area that align with our training philosophy.
Training Process
How long does it typically take to see results?
The timeline for seeing results varies depending on several factors:
- The specific behavior being addressed
- Your dog's temperament, age, and previous training history
- The consistency of training between sessions
- How ingrained the behavior is
For basic obedience and manners, many clients see noticeable improvements within 2-3 weeks when following our training plans consistently. For Shiva's Workout Lessons, energy level improvements are often visible after just one session, though lasting behavioral changes typically require regular sessions over time.
Complex behavioral issues like aggression, severe anxiety, or deeply ingrained habits typically require 2-3 months of consistent work to see significant changes, with ongoing management and practice needed to maintain results.
We focus on setting realistic expectations and celebrate incremental progress along the way.
Will you train my dog or teach me to train my dog?
Our approach is a combination of both. We believe that successful dog training requires both professional guidance and owner involvement. Our programs are structured to:
- Assess your dog's specific needs and establish a training plan
- Demonstrate proper training techniques and handling skills
- Coach you through practicing these techniques
- Provide feedback and adjustments as needed
- Assign specific homework exercises between sessions
For our Shiva's Workout Lessons, we do the physical exercise portion for you, but still provide guidance on reinforcing good behaviors at home.
Our goal is to equip you with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to continue reinforcing your dog's training throughout their life. This integrated approach leads to more lasting results and a stronger bond between you and your dog.
Do you offer in-home training services?
Yes, we offer in-home training for certain programs, particularly for behavioral modification where seeing the dog in their home environment is beneficial. There is an additional fee for in-home services depending on your location.
In-home training is especially valuable for:
- Addressing home-specific behaviors (door rushing, kitchen counter surfing, etc.)
- Dogs with anxiety who might be stressed in new environments
- Working with multiple dogs in the household
- Demonstrating management strategies in your specific living space
Our On Leash and Off Leash programs typically involve a combination of in-home and on-site sessions to provide practice in various environments.
What equipment do you use for training?
We use a variety of training equipment based on the specific needs of each dog and the training goals. Our most commonly used equipment includes:
- Flat buckle collars and front-clip harnesses for everyday walking
- Martingale collars for dogs who might slip out of regular collars
- Long lines (15-30 feet) for off-leash training practice
- High-quality food rewards and treat pouches
- Clickers and marker words for precise timing in positive reinforcement
- Engagement toys like tugs and balls for reward-based training
We select equipment that is both effective and humane, prioritizing your dog's physical and psychological wellbeing. We'll recommend specific equipment based on your dog's size, temperament, and training needs, and provide guidance on proper usage.
How much owner participation is required?
The level of owner participation varies by program:
- Shiva's Workout Lessons:
- Minimal owner participation during the sessions themselves (we handle the exercise), but we provide guidance for reinforcing calm behavior at home.
- Dymond's On Leash Program:
- Moderate participation required. You'll need to attend training sessions and practice daily for 10-15 minutes between sessions.
- Spartacus's Off Leash Training:
- High participation required. Success depends on regular practice (15-20 minutes daily) and consistent reinforcement of commands.
- Danja's Behavioral Modification:
- Significant participation required. You'll need to implement management strategies, follow behavior modification protocols, and maintain consistency in your responses to your dog's behavior.
For all programs except Shiva's Workouts, your participation and consistency between sessions is critical for successful outcomes. We provide detailed handouts, video demonstrations, and ongoing support to help you implement training effectively at home.

How far in advance should I book?
Booking timeframes vary based on the service and seasonal demand:

- For On Leash and Off Leash Programs: 2-3 weeks to secure your preferred start date

For Shiva's Workout Lessons, we also recommend bringing:
- A towel if your dog will be engaging in water activities

For behavioral consultations, it's helpful to bring videos of the problematic behavior if it's something that doesn't typically occur during training sessions.
